Currency and pricing

What this covers

Which currency you are billed in, why it does not change, and how it differs from the currency your restaurant uses.

Everything on this page needs the manage-billing permission, which belongs to the Owner alone — not even a Manager has it. If Subscription is missing from your settings menu, you are not an Owner (link The Owner account).

Two different currencies

Tabledoo has two currency settings and they do completely separate jobs. Confusing them is the single most common billing question.

They can differ quite legitimately. A restaurant billing its guests in one currency while paying for its software in another is normal, and nothing in Tabledoo converts between them — they never meet.

For the restaurant side, see Timezone, currency and formats.

Your billing currency is locked

It was set when you first subscribed, from the currency you were charged in, and it stays fixed for the life of the account.

What that means in practice:

  • Plan prices are always shown in your currency. Browsing plans does not offer a currency choice, and cannot accidentally change it.
  • SMS credit packs are priced in the same currency, with no choice at checkout — so every charge on your account is consistent (link Buying credit packs).
  • Changing plan does not change it, in either direction.
  • Your invoices are all in one currency, which is what makes them reconcilable.

Why it is locked

Consistency in your own records. If the currency could change, your invoice history would be split across two currencies at whatever rate applied on each day — unreconcilable for you and your accountant, for no real benefit. One currency for the life of the account keeps the arithmetic honest.

The one case where it shows

Occasionally a credit pack has no price set in a particular currency. Then you are told plainly that the pack is not available in your billing currency, rather than being charged in the wrong one. That is a gap on Tabledoo's side, not a restriction on you — report it (link Reporting a problem).

If you genuinely need it changed

It happens: the business was set up in one country and now trades in another, or the original signup used the wrong currency.

Contact support (link Reporting a problem). Expect it to be a manual change rather than instant, because it touches your subscription with the payment provider. Worth knowing before you ask:

  • Invoices already issued do not change. Your history stays in the old currency, so there will be a split in your records at the changeover whichever way it is done.
  • It is not a conversion. You move to the new currency's price for your plan, which may not be the exact converted equivalent — prices are set per currency, not by exchange rate.
  • Have a clear reason. "Our accounts are now in euros" is one; a favourable exchange rate is not, and prices are deliberately set per market rather than tracking rates.

Prices are set per currency, not converted

Each plan has a price in each supported currency, set deliberately. So the figures are round numbers in every currency rather than the output of an exchange rate, and they do not move when rates move — your bill is the same next month regardless of what the markets did.

Stable and predictable, which is what you want from a subscription. It does mean you cannot compare across currencies and expect an exact match.

Good to know

Tax is handled separately and depends on your location and the details on your account, not on your currency (link Invoices).

Your card does not have to be in the same currency. Your bank converts if needed and may add its own fee — that is between you and them.

SMS credits are not money. Credits are a count, not a balance in any currency; only the packs have a price (link How SMS credits work).
